Great commencement speeches

I’ve read and watched two fantastic commencement speeches.

One is the Steve Jobs commencement speech, given at Stanford University in 2005. You can find the text of the speech on the Stanford website. I’ve attached the YouTube video below here:

Second is a speech that Conan O’Brien gave at a New York City high school in 2006. It’s not as inspirational, but it’s still got a great message for high schoolers. The weblink below has both a (quite poor) video and a transcript of the speech.

Quote for athletes everywhere…

I think I first saw this on Tom Peter’s Blog.

Hall of Fame basketball player Larry Bird was once asked what he wanted his epitaph to be; surprisingly, he said that he wanted to have played as hard at practices where not a soul was in attendance as in Game 7 of a World Championship series. Nice.

That’s something I occasionally need to remind myself on weekend outings.
